United Church of Christ Denounces Mountain Top Removal, Affirms Urgent Call to Carbon Neutrality

Today the United Church of Christ General Synod (the national setting of the church Rev. Rachel and Rev. Kent are ordained to), passed a resolution decrying the use and effects of mountain top removal in Appalachia. A second resolution forcefully committed the denomination to carbon reduction and a call for immediate global action to reduce carbon emissions. As a first step, the UCC will divest of fossil fuel stocks and reinvest in sustainable energy companies instead. The action was immediately commended by Desmond Tutu and other world leaders.

The 1.5 million member denomination has a long history of justice actions, and in fact was a primary funder of Union Church and Berea College’s early ministry, and also financially John G. Fee as an abolitionist missionary. We are so glad that the wider church has learned and responded to the needs of our mountain communities and continues to think carefully about care for God’s earth.
