Welcome
The Call Doug Hindman and LaRee Jacobs, Readers
One: “Today I understand vocation quite differently–not as a goal to be achieved but as a gift to be received. Discovering vocation does not mean scrambling toward some prize just beyond my reach but accepting the treasure of true self I already possess.
One: Vocation does not come from a voice “out there” calling me to become something I am not. It comes from a voice “in here” calling me to be the person I was born to be, to fulfill the original selfhood given me at birth by God.”
― Parker J. Palmer, Let Your Life Speak: Listening for the Voice of Vocation

Lighting the Justice Candle
Today we light the Justice Candle for Michael Waldman, President of the Brennan Center for Justice, a nonpartisan law and policy institute that focuses on improving systems of democracy and justice. The Brennan Center is a leading national voice on voting rights, money in politics, criminal justice reform, and constitutional law.
Michael Waldman is the author of The Fight to Vote, a history of the struggle to win voting rights for all citizens. The Wall Street Journal called it “an engaging, concise history of American voting practices.”
Hymn O God, You Call for Justice Aurelia Deborah Thompson, Song Leader
1. O God, you call for justice—for goodness, never greed! You seek a world of fairness where all have what they need— Where all have food and water and homes in which to thrive, Where all have hope and laughter and joy to be alive!
2. O God, you call for kindness instead of keeping score; You seek a world that welcomes the hungry and the poor. Lord, where there is injustice may we work to protect the struggling ones, the voiceless that others would reject.
3. You call us to walk humbly, for we are not our own; we all are poor and needy; we need the grace you’ve shown. May we respond to others reflecting what you give—compassion, kindness, justice— so all may gladly live.
4. O God, may our great nation seek justice, as we should, and work with dedication to seek the common good. We’re blessed to be a blessing; may we within our law seek justice and compassion that reaches out to all.

Hebrew Scripture Lesson Proverbs 22:1-2, 8-9, 22-23 Doug Hindman, Reader
A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, and favor is better than silver or gold. The rich and the poor have this in common: the Lord is the maker of them all. Whoever sows injustice will reap calamity, and the rod of anger will fail. Those who are generous are blessed, for they share their bread with the poor. Do not rob the poor because they are poor, or crush the afflicted at the gate; for the Lord pleads their cause and despoils of life those who despoil them.
Children’s Moment
Please join in singing as we bless children everywhere: May God’s blessing guard, protect and guide you. God bless you, God bless you. Our savior’s loving arms be ever ’round you. God bless you, God bless you.
Gospel Lesson Mark 7:24-37
From there he set out and went away to the region of Tyre. He entered a house and did not want anyone to know he was there. Yet he could not escape notice, but a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit immediately heard about him, and she came and bowed down at his feet. Now the woman was a Gentile, of Syrophoenician origin. She begged him to cast the demon out of her daughter. He said to her, ‘Let the children be fed first, for it is not fair to take the children’s food and throw it to the dogs.’ But she answered him, ‘Sir, even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs.’ Then he said to her, ‘For saying that, you may go—the demon has left your daughter.’ So she went home, found the child lying on the bed, and the demon gone. Then he returned from the region of Tyre, and went by way of Sidon towards the Sea of Galilee, in the region of the Decapolis. They brought to him a deaf man who had an impediment in his speech; and they begged him to lay his hand on him. He took him aside in private, away from the crowd, and put his fingers into his ears, and he spat and touched his tongue. Then looking up to heaven, he sighed and said to him, ‘Ephphatha’, that is, ‘Be opened.’ And immediately his ears were opened, his tongue was released, and he spoke plainly. Then Jesus ordered them to tell no one; but the more he ordered them, the more zealously they proclaimed it. They were astounded beyond measure, saying, ‘He has done everything well; he even makes the deaf to hear and the mute to speak.’

Communion Prayer
Sanctus Land of Rest
Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might; heaven and earth are full of your glory, Hosanna in the highest! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest, Hosanna in the highest.
Words of Institution
One: On the night he was betrayed, Jesus sat with his disciples and broke bread. He blessed it, lifted it up, and spoke these words:
All: “This is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”
One: Then, after supper was over, he took the cup and blessed it, and said:
All: “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.”
One: Remembering you as we come to the richness of your table, we cannot and we do not forget the rawness of the world and the cry of the poor. We cannot take bread and forget those who are hungry. We cannot drink and forget those who are thirsty. Help us feed others as we are fed, and reject the temptation to self-satisfaction. This we pray in the name of the one who taught us to reach to you as…
Our Lord’s Prayer
Our Maker, Our Mother and Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.
