This week in our readings Paul spoke of the foolishness of the Gospel saving those who are perishing and Jesus turned the tables on the money changers in the 2nd chapter of John. Here is the prayer offered by Bill Srsic, our worship leader, as we consider the tables in our lives that need to more »

This Sunday marked the beginning of a new church year, the season of Advent opening with apocalyptic words from Mark 13 telling us all to keep awake and keep watch. Isaiah readings called on God to “Rend the heavens and come down!” Like the authors of these texts, we too live in a world too more »

Homecoming Sunday at Union Church was a wonderful celebration with friends new and old. The parable from Matthew related the story of the bridesmaids waiting for the wedding to begin, 5 of whom had prepared with extra oil, and 5 who had not. This week’s gospel reminds of the story of a prominent citizen, a member of the establishment, who seeks out Jesus (the radical prophet) for a meeting. The familiar words of Jesus “You must be born from above (or anew)” in this night-time encounter with Nicodemus are often heard as a harsh commandment, and have been used more »

This Sunday’s scripture readings had to do with good choices: the blessings of entering into good covenants before entering the promised land from the Deuteronomy text, and the much harder words from Jesus in Matthew, “upping the ante” on how righteous one must be. At least in Jesus’ case, the challenge seems impossible: who has not gotten more »

Pastor Kent returned from sabbatical today after four months of travel, reading, eating, and rest. As the picture shows, however, there may have been some unfortunate side effects to his long absence. 🙂 Ready or not, Rev. Kent will return to the pulpit on February 9 with a special communion service to welcome him home. more »
