Prayer for the Week: April 28, 2014

Rev. Rachel preached a sermon illustrated by Bearington Bear and the inside, outside, upside downside ways we can feel about our lives and about our faith. In the gospel for this week’s reading, the disciple Thomas doubts and is still counted among the faithful. In fact he becomes the “stand in” for all of us more »

Prayer for the Week: March 24, 2014

Thirst! Lack of water can drive us mad. Lack of spiritual upwellings, oases, or streams of grace, can leave us devastated. Whether slowly drying out or suddenly deprived, we all need “living water,” as Jesus tells the woman at the well in last Sunday’s Gospel reading.  For whatever journey you may be on this week, more »

Prayer for the Week: March 17, 2014

This week’s gospel reminds of the story of a prominent citizen, a member of the establishment, who seeks out Jesus (the radical prophet) for a meeting. The familiar words of Jesus “You must be born from above (or anew)” in this night-time encounter with Nicodemus are often heard as a harsh commandment, and have been used more »

Prayer for the Week: February 17, 2014

This Sunday’s scripture readings had to do with good choices: the blessings of entering into good covenants before entering the promised land from the Deuteronomy text, and the much harder words from Jesus in Matthew, “upping the ante” on how righteous one must be. At least in Jesus’ case, the challenge seems impossible: who has not gotten more »

Welcome Back, Rev. Kent

Pastor Kent returned from sabbatical today after four months of travel, reading, eating, and rest. As the picture shows, however, there may have been some unfortunate side effects to his long absence. 🙂  Ready or not, Rev. Kent will return to the pulpit on February 9 with a special communion service to welcome him home. more »

Prayer for the Week: September 22

This week in the Gospel reading from Luke,  Jesus tells a confounding parable of a corrupt owner, a dishonest steward, and some lucky borrowers. Here is the prayer we offered in response to a complicated world and Jesus’ call to examine our loyalty to money and greed in contrast to our loyalty to a different more »

Prayer for the Week: August 25th, 2013

This week we commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington.  Our scripture for the week, Luke 13:19-17 tells of the bent-over woman who was healed on the Sabbath, causing both liberation for her and fear among those in power.  We hold people of both ilks in our prayers this week, as we pray: more »

Prayer for the Week — July 28th, 2013

This week we shared reflections from the delegation to El Salvador.  They reflected on their experiences in light of the Lord’s Prayer, which we said together in both English and Spanish.  As we pray this week, we pray for people around the world still fighting for basic justice and fair treatment.  — Rev. Rachel God, more »

Prayer For the Week: July 21, 2013

In the reading for this week, we enter the house of Mary and Martha. One of them is doing the exact right thing in the wrong way, and the other is doing the wrong thing in the right spirit. We find ourselves in both of these situations, seeking to balance competing goods, competing needs. Here more »
