Transfiguration Day Prayer, February 15, 2015

Transfiguration, the day of change and challenge, is always the last day in the season after Epiphany and the Sunday immediately before the start of Lent. In the story we see Jesus on the mountain with 3 disciples visited by Moses and Elijah and a reprise of the voice at his baptism. Tempted to remain on the mountain top, Peter suggests building tents for the three dignitaries. Jesus refuses and urges them down the hillside to engage the journey to Jerusalem. Here is the prayer offered by Bill Stolte, worship leader, from words written by Rev. Kent.

Lord of High and Low, of mountain and plain, of Elijah and Elisha, of Jesus and just us…we pray this day for change. Whether with chariots of fire and miracles on mountain tops, or just the quiet steady change of a spiritual river wearing a grand canyon in the desert of our present life, we ask to see the difference in ourselves so that more light comes in, and more light can go forth. Blessed by what we have, we are so grateful. But blessed by what you call us to, we can never be the same. Set our faces to all that will take us to the mountains of grace, the streams of mercy, the breath of hope, and your everlasting love. Change us—for good. Forever.  Amen.
