Emma’s Quilt

This quilt was a gift to our mother from Emma, an elderly neighbor in rural Missouri, who lived “down the road” from our farm.

One day in the early 1950s, shortly before Emma and her brother moved to be closer to relatives, she walked the half-mile to our house bearing a large bundle wrapped in butcher paper. Inside was this lovely quilt, pieced and quilted totally by hand.

Our mother was one of the few contacts Emma and her brother had, as they lived a very simple life without electricity or automobile and stayed to themselves. Mom went over every so often with bounty from our garden, homemade soup if she heard they were ill, and always a Christmas box, including many varieties of hand-made cookies.

The quilt was truly a gift of love and our mother, also a quilter, was deeply touched by the hours of work and the generosity it represented.  It seems fitting that the proceeds of the raffle will support mission and service projects of Union Church locally, nationally, and internationally.
